through the Three Passes / NPL 17

The
three passes trek is one of the
strenuous trekking routes in Everest region.
Three passes trek fulfills the dream of
every amateur climbers and serious trekkers,
who have been seeking the thrill of
adventure. This route is popular among the
adventure seekers around the globe and leads
you to experience the Everest mountain
range. The three passes trek includes Kongma
La pass (5535m), Cho La pass (5420m) and
Renjo-la pass (5545m). These three passes
are the passes which we have to cross during
our trek so it is called three passes trek.
During trek you will encounter with the
natural and cultural beauty of the Everest
region. Three passes trek offer magnificent
views of Everest, Lhotse, Thamserku, Ama
Dablam and many more.
Three passes trek start with an exhilarating
mountain flight to Lukla, then we continue
our trekking through Namche, Tyangboche and
Dingboche to the Kongma La pass surrounded
Himalayan giants. From the Kongma La pass,
you will descend to the Khumbu glacier and
then ascend Kala Pathar for dazzling view of
Mount Everest. Then you will cross the
glaciated Cho La pass to Gokyo valley, where
we can explore the valley and climb Gokyo Ri
to enjoy more excellent views of western
snowcaps including another angle of Everest.
After that, we will scramble ahead to cross
third pass Renjo-la pass near to the Tibetan
border to the north. After accomplishing the
third pass we will re-trace back to Lukla
and then fly back to Katmandu. Although you
have to cross the high passes above 5000 m,
you do not require any technical climbing
skills. Anyone with sound fitness and good
health can complete the trek. |

Day 03: |
Fly Kathmandu - Lukla and commence
trek to Phakding
Fly to Lukla early in the morning
from Tribhuvan Domestic Airport,
Kathmandu It is 40 minutes flight in
twin otter. Lukla is located at the
altitude of 2800m so there will be
quite colder than in Kathmandu.
After walking few minutes from Lukla
airport, stop at restaurant for tea
break. books, internet facility. If
you need some trekking gear then you
can buy here in Lukla. |
Day 04: |
Trek Phakding - Namche Bazaar
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
(3440 m.). The trail starts through
a level path along the right bank.
Thamserku looms skyward on the
opposite bank. You cross a stream
and climb the terraced hill from the
Dudh Koshi route, to arrive at
Bengar. The trail now climbs from
the riverbed on the left bank into
the mountain, through a forest to
Chumoa. You continue along a path
with many ups and downs; cross a
stream, and pass by the tiny village
of Monjo. Now, you descend the path
of stone steps and return to the
right bank over a wooden bridge.
After a short climb you come to
Jorsales teahouse and hotel, also
stop at the National Park Service
where a park entrance fee is
collected. After your departure from
Jorsale you enter a forested
mountainside. You follow a short
walk along the riverbed of this
V-shaped valley where the river
forks - the right is the Dudh Koshi
and the left is the Bhote Koshi that
leads to Nampa La. After short
distance along the Bhote Koshi you
begin the steep ascent to Namche
Bazaar. As the mountain path zigzags
uphill, you will emerge at a ridge
top rest area that offers excellent
views of Everest (8848m) and Lhotse
(8516m.) The climb eases somewhat,
and Namche Bazaar appears ahead as
you travel along the path surrounded
by pines. Pass the plateau where the
Saturday bazaar is held and enter
the village. Namche Bazaar (3440m)
is surrounded on three sides by
mountain ranges and opens out only
where it faces the Bhote Koshi. |
Day 05:
|
Free day in Namche Bazaar
Rest day at Namche Bazaar (3440 m.)
for acclimatization. Namche is
tucked away between two ridges
amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu
and has an abundance of lodges, tea
shops and souvenir shops as well as
a magnificent outlook. It is an
ideal place to spend a rest day for
acclimatization to the high altitude
before heading off towards
Thyangboche. For the acclimatization
you walk up to Khumjung where you
can visit monastery You can also
enjoy the splendid views of Everest,
Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse,
Lhotse, Tawche, Kwangde and so on.
Or, you can have an hour walk up to
the Syangboche (3800m.) where
Everest View Hotel is situated above
Namche Bazaar for the outstanding
view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama
Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. |
Day 06: |
Trek Namche Thyangboche
Trek from Namche Bazaar to
Tyangboche (3867 m.). You leave the
village for a climb to the top of a
ridge and level mountain path that
offers an excellent panorama of
Thamserku, Kantega, and Kusum
Kangrib. To the right there is a
steep cliff that drops down to the
Dudh Kosi, faintly visible on the
valley floor below. As you make your
way around a branch ridge, Ama
Dablam (6812m) Everest, Lhotse,
Nuptse (7855m) and Tawoche (6501m)
suddenly appear. After a gentle
descent the mountain path ends; you
will come to the fork leading to
Gokyo. Now you descend past two tea
houses and through the village of
Trashinga. Though you cannot see it,
you can hear the Dudh Kosi and soon
you descend to the river and arrive
at Phunki Tenga. It is a long climb
to Thyangboche; the first half is
especially steep. As you climb
through the forested zone, the
incline eases and a splendid view
appears. Continue climbing the
mountainside diagonally until you
come to the stone gate built by
lamas which marks your entry into
Thyangboche (3867m). |
Day 07:
|
Trek Thyangboche Dingboche
From Thyangboche the trail at first
descent to Deboche (3820m) through a
forest of birches, juniper, conifers
and rhododendrons. There is a small
settlement as well as monastery at
Deboche. The level trail further
ahead from Deboche to Imja khola
passes many mane walls in a deep
rhododendron forest. Along the way
from Thyangboche before crossing
Imja khola you can often see the
musk deer, pheasant (national birds
of Nepal), blue sheep etc. After
crossing the Imja khola the trail
climbs past some magnificently
carved mane stones to lower
Pangboche (3930m). Beyond Pangboche
the trail lead level and gradually
up to somare (4010m) then level walk
to orsho (4190m). There are two
trails further ahead from orsho
whereas one trail higher up left
hand side leads to Pheriche and
lower trail right hand side above
Imja khola leads gradually ascend to
Dingboche (4410m). During the day
you can see amazing views of Mt.
Everest (8848), Lhotse (8516m),
Lhotse shar (8382m), Nuptse (7879m),
peak- 38(7591m), Ama dablam (6856m),
Thamserku (6623m), Kangtega (6783m),
Kusum kangaru (6367), Cholaste
(6335m) and Island (6189m) |
Day 08: |
Trek Dingboche Chhukung
From here we have a short walking
day as it is very important to avoid
getting affected by the thinning of
the air and get acclimatization to
climb Island peak. Our guide will
give important and useful
information about the situation on
climbing Island peak and about next
days activities. |
Day 09: |
Trek Chhukung - Ghhukung Ri to
Chhukung
Rest day in Chhukung or optional
hike to the top of Chukung Ri (5565
m), a non technical walk up a well
defined trail for magnificent views
of the dramatic South Wall of Lhotse,
the pink granite monolith of Makalu,
and the southern wall fluted with
ice gulleys from 7000m Baruntse to
7000m Ama Dablam, the peak that many
feel is the most beautiful in the
world. |
Day 10:
|
Trek Chhukung - Kongma La to Lobuche
The Kongma La pass takes only an
hour or so via Thugla. To reach the
Kongma La, we head directly west out
of Chhukhung on a small, rocky trail
and contour around many hillsides,
usually not very steep, until we
reach the Pokalden Base Camp. After
a few other hills, we will reach
another Base Camp for Pokalden and a
clear blue lake which sits just
below the pass. We climb the last
half hour on a trail which is good
but looks impossibly built into the
cliff-side, and about 4 hours later
we will reach the Kongma La at 5540
meters. |
Day 11: |
Trek Lobuche Gorakshep
After a short climb through meadows,
look down on the Khumbu Glacier.
Straight ahead is Kalapattar - the
best vantage point to view the
entire south face of Mt. Everest and
the surrounding peaks. After
approximately 3 hrs of hiking you
will arrive at Base Camp and enjoy
views of the Khumbu Glacier and
icefall, where Everest expeditions
begin, after the excursion return
back to Gorakshep. |
Day 12: |
Trek Gorakshep - Kalapattar
Gorakshep
The day starts with a hike up to
Kalapattar (5545m), the best
viewpoint to witness Mt. Everest and
the spectacular Himalayan range.
Then trek back to Gorekshep. |
Day 13: |
Trek Gorakshep Tuglha
Descend to Tuglha |
Day 14: |
Trek Tuglha - Chola La Thagna
We begin the day by climbing to
Chola-la crossing over and
descending once more to Thanga
(4500m). |
Day 15: |
Trek Thagna - Gokyo Ri Gokyo
This day early in the morning we
have steep climb up to the top of
Gokyo Ri (5483m/19083ft) ample
rewards to one attempts this trip.
There are stunning views of the
supper Gokyo valley, the massive
Ngozumpa Glacier and an incredible
panoramic view of the whole Khumbu
Himalayas, such as giants as
Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu
(8481m), Cho-Oyu (8153m) and Gychung
Kang (7922m) can be seen. Those who
explore the glacier and Gokyo peak
are rewarded. |
Day 16: |
Trek Gokyo - Renjo La Chhule
The crossing of the Renjo La Pass
will be exciting and challenging as
we descend into remote northern
Valley where access is restricted,
and the landscape is progressively
that of the Tibetan Valleys beyond
the border. There is a chance we
will meet Tibetan Traders descending
from the Nangpa La pass that leads
through the Himalayas from Tibet
with their caravans of woolly yaks
laden with goods. |
Day 17: |
Trek Chhule Thame
After taking breakfast, we trek down
to Thame more amazing snow peaks. We
may meet Tibetan trader encampments
along the way for pictures of a rare
lifestyle. About 150 meters above
Thame, there is a Thame Monastery, a
picturesque monastery set among the
many homes of monks and lay people.
It's perched on the side of a hill
overlooking the valley. This is the
site for the spring celebration of
the Mani Rimdu festival, held about
the middle of May each year. |
Day 18: |
Trek Thame - Namche Bazaar
Continue our trekking following the
flat and descending to first resting
place Thamo after heading towards to
Namche bazaar. |
Day 19: |
Trek Namche Lukla
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
(2886 m.) takes about five hours.
The last day of your trek leads from
Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla.
The trek is pleasant, except for few
short uphill climbs and then down to
the Bhote-Koshi River crossing it
three times. The last uphill climb
of 45 minutes will bring you to
Lukla for your overnight stay. |
