Rara and Kagmara Trek / NPL 33
Rara Lake one of the best destinations for trekking in western Nepal .This area is surrounded by Rara National park. It is the largest lake in Nepal surrounded by Rara National Park. The route is well off the beaten track and affords glimpses of culture and scenery very different from other parts of Nepal. The trek offers a dramatic display of clear high altitude lakes mingled with pine, spruce and juniper forests as well as breath taking views of the snow capped Himalayan peaks.

Rara Lake is as deep as 167 meters in some places, and drains into the river Mugu Karnali via Nijar Khola. The Rara National Park is the home of endangered red panda, common langur, and rhesus macaque. Alos numerous migratory birds visit the lake during April and November. The trek to Rara from Jumla passes through dense forests and alpine glades. The main villages on route are Urthu (2,520 m), Padmara (3,017 m), Bumra (2,830 m), Chautha (3,100 m) and Pina (2,430 m). There are two passes on the way. The first is Khali Langna (3,545 m) above Pina from where one can view Kagmara ranges to the east and Chyakhure Lekh to the south. The second is Ghurchi Langna (3,457 m) from where Mugu Valley and the mountains of Humla are visible to the north. Rara lake is about eight kilometres from Pine.

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel

Day 06: Trek Jumla - Dhanphe Lagana
Following the main street of Jumla, passing the red-roofed hospital, the wide level trail leads to the college building and passes a collection of western-style houses. After a long climb the trail passes through Sisnamul (2830m) entering a forest of big trees to Chere (3010m) which is a large horse and sheep pasture. From Chere the trail becomes steeper and climbs through meadows to Danphe Lagna offering the views of Patrasi Himal (6860m) and Jagdula Himal (5785m). The trail descends gently through a forest of spruces, birches and rhododendron and reaches Danphe Lagna. O/N at Danphe Lagna.
Day 07:  Trek Dhanphe Lagana Chautha
Descending steeply through the forest of firs, birches, walnuts and bamboo the trail comes to Hiran Duski (2840m) and then Sinja Khola. Crossing the bridge the trail follows to Nyawre (2660m). From here the trail leaves the river and starts climbing to Kabra. The steep climb proceeds to Bhara (2920m) which is a classical Tibetan village and descends to the village of Chautha.
Day 08: Trek Chautha Dhotu
The trail follows the uphill way crossing some fields at Chante Chaur (2940m) and climbs to Bhulbule, the Rara National park entrance station (3130m). From here, climbing gently you get to Ghurchi Lagna (3450m). From here you can observe views of Mugue Karnali River and the snowy peaks bordering Tibet. Then the trail descends through a spruce forest leading to Pina (2400m). Following the direct trail to Rara Lake through pine forest passing Jhyari Khola at 2400m you reach to the small settlement of Dhotu.
Day 09: Trek Dhotu - Rara Tal
It is a short, pleasant trek with fine views to the north. From Dhotu, we traverse a steep north facing slope and cross a series of fields down to a small stream. Crossing the bridge, we climb up to the Thakuri village of Jhyari (2630m). From Jhyari, we climb steadily up through cedar forest to a huge meadow atop a 3050 meter ridge with great overhead views of Rara Lake. We will follow the trail along to the northern side of the Lake, where the park headquarters and the camping ground are situated.
Day 10: Rest day in Rara Tal
Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal. It is almost 13 km around the lake and a day devoted to walk around is well spent. Designated a national park in 1975, this region offers remoteness and a wilderness experience unlike any other region of Nepal, where birds, flowers and wildlife thrive. Among the mammals in this region are Himalayan bears, serows, gorals, musk deer, red pandas and both rhesus and langur monkeys. The 170 meter deep lake is a habitat for otters and an important resting place for migrating water fowl. Eco-friendly trek guide will take you around the Rara Lake as sightseeing.
Day 11: Trek Rara Tal Gossain
From the bridge at the western end of Rara lake the trail will follow the Khatyar Khola river. We will keep following this river slowly descending before we climb out following a small trail surrounded by pine, spruce and rhododendron forests. We follow our path dropping into the Ghatta valley heading towards the small settlement of Gossain where there are several excellent campsites (5 hrs).
Day 12: Trek Gossain Sinja
The route keeps heading down the Ghatta valley from Gorosingha following the Sinja Khola river downwards to Sinja. From the 12th to 14th century, Sinja was the capital of the Malla dynasty that ruled western Nepal. The ruins of the old palace can be seen across the river. There is an interesting temple here dedicated to Bhagwati, the goddess of justice who rides atop a tiger (5 hrs).
Day 13: Trek Sinja - Jalja Chaur via Jaljala
The trail crosses the Sinja Khola passing a few small villages through the forest of pines, birches and oaks and then climbs steeply to Jaljala Chaur.
Day 14: Trek Jalja Chaur Jumla
Climbing through the forest and descending to a few houses you will get to Chauri Khola (3090m). From here descending sometime and passing the school at Ghurumati t you come to Jumla.
Day 15: Trek Jumla - Goti Chaur
Follow the Peaceful verdant areas strewn with shining irrigation canals and rivers. In summer, the flora brightly blossom: orchids, forget-me-nots, geraniums, mints, buttercups, gentians; Arrival at Goti Chaur
Day 16: Trek Goti Chaur Chaurta
Walk along the trail that is followed by Corn, potatoes, barley and buckwheat fields alternate with meadows and forests on its both sides; Arrival at Chaurta
Day 17: Trek Chaurta Kaigaon
An extremely enjoyable walks, t through more forest, which yields the first view of the Kagmara Lekh and the Bheri River itself. The path can be seen detouring across the hillside through the village of Chaurkot. The village Rimi and Kaigaon are soon clearly visible and the path drops down through Rimi, which is quite dirty, to the more picturesque. Kaigaon village.
Day 18: Trek Kaigaon Toijem
We trek on the west bank of the Bheri River, passing Hurikot to a sign which says the entrance to Shey Phoksundo National Park. The trail stays high above the river to the confluence where the Jagdula and Garpung rivers join to form the Bheri. We cross the Jagdula Khola and camp near the army post at Toijem (2920m).
Day 19: Trek Toijem - Kagmara Phedi
We follow the trail up the western side of the Garpung Khola to about 3650m, then cross to the eastern side and continue upstream. The valley narrows and the river becomes a series of waterfalls as the trail climbs to a moraine at 3900m.We make a camp at an elevation of about 4000m.The panoramic views of the peaks are sensational. Wildflowers abound and birds like snow pigeons, redstarts, ravens and griffons can be sighted.
Day 20: Trek Kagmara Phedi - Daju via Kagmara La
Cross Kagmara pass (5115 m) and trek to Daju.
Day 21: Trek Daju - Phoksundo Tal via Pungmi
The trek on this day passes through meadow, alpine ftest and various small and big waterfalls to reach Phiksundo Lake. This lake is the deepest lake in Nepal, offers stunning beauty. Considered sacrosanct by the Dopla locals, it is praised for its aquamarine greenish blue color. No aquatic life in the lake pronounces that the water is crystal clear. Called by the seasoned travellers the jewel of Dolpo, Phoksundo Lake gives refreshing experience to the eyes. Ringed by tall snow-capped mountains, view of Phoksundo Lake is an extremely satisfying experience
Day 22: Trek Phoksundo Tal Rohagaon
Leaving the lake behind, we follow the trail across the Suli Gad river, the outlet of the lake, descending gradually to Sumdoa. The trail continues along the river valley through the villages of Shepka, Ankhe, and Rohagaon
Day 23: Trek Rohagaon Dunai
Descend the Tila valley through spruce forests, past barely fields and rice terraces, irrigation works and water driven mills, to reach Dunai.
Day 24: Trek Dunai - Juphal .
Continue descending to Juphal.
Day 25: Fly Juphal - Nepalgunj - Kathmandu
Day 26: Kathmandu
Day 27: Departure transfer to the airport for the onwards journey
